About the book
Set in Clayton County and Atlanta, Georgia, during the Civil War and Reconstruction, Margaret Mitchell's 1936 novel opens in April 1861 at Tara, the plantation of Irish immigrant Gerald O'Hara. His oldest daughter, sixteen-year-old Scarlett, is spoiled and manipulative, and she secretly loves her neighbor Ashley Wilkes, who is about to become engaged to his cousin Melanie Hamilton. At a party she also meets Rhett Butler, a man with a reputation for seducing young women. The coming war will change her way of life for good. Mitchell won the 1937 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and the 1939 film adaptation won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
