About the book
British author Dolly Alderton tells a breakup largely from the man's side. Andy, a 35-year-old comedian in London whose stand-up career has stalled, is left by Jen, his girlfriend of nearly four years, with little explanation, and he cannot work out why she stopped loving him. Homeless, with friends who seem to have grown up without him, he fixates on solving the puzzle of their relationship. Andy narrates most of the novel; its final section shifts to Jen. Alderton began it in 2020 after a breakup and interviewed around 15 men, who often felt unable to share their feelings in depth with male friends. It was shortlisted for the 2024 Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for Comic Fiction.
