About the book

Max Porter's debut is set in a London flat where two young boys and their father, a Ted Hughes scholar writing a book about the poet, have just lost the boys' mother without warning. Into their grief comes Crow, a talking bird the size of a person who acts as trickster, healer and babysitter, and who threatens to stay until the family no longer needs him. The narration switches rapidly among three voices, Dad, the Boys and Crow, and mixes prose, dialogue and verse. Its title echoes an Emily Dickinson poem about hope, and Crow is borrowed from Hughes's 1970 poetry collection.

Dua Lipa admitted that Crow's voice can take a moment to settle into, but urged readers to give themselves over to the story and enjoy the wild ride.

It might take you a second to get into the voice of Crow but once you are, you are in for a treat. Grief Is The Thing With Feathers is definitely a book where you really just have to surrender to the story – take it from me, let yourself go and enjoy the wild ride.
