About the book
In Ankh-Morpork, Discworld's greatest city, Captain Sam Vimes runs a ramshackle Night Watch and drinks more than he should. A secret order plots to overthrow the Patrician and put a puppet king on the throne, and to stage the scheme it summons a dragon, a species long believed extinct, to terrorize the streets. The Watch, widely seen as useless, gains an idealistic recruit in Carrot Ironfoundersson, a human orphan raised by dwarfs. Terry Pratchett's fantasy is the eighth Discworld novel and the first about the City Watch, and it came out in 1989.
Brandon Sanderson suggests it as the place for newcomers to Pratchett to start, and Readable.io founder Dave Child named it his favorite fantasy novel growing up, the first Discworld book that showed him the series was satire.

Growing up, I loved fantasy worlds - Middle Earth, Discworld and Narnia were where I loved to let my mind wander. I think if I had to pick a favourite then, it would be Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett. That was the first Discworld book I read where I realised there was another level to it - that Discworld was satirical. I went back and started reading the whole collection from The Colour of Magic onwards, and haven't missed one since.

In the book, a group of misfits saves the day because they put their mind to it and get a little lucky. Startups are a little bit like that - the odds are stacked against you but you might win nevertheless.
However Guards Guards, is the book where I suggest people new to Pratchett start.
