About the book
Set in the Canadian wilderness, Gary Paulsen's survival novel follows thirteen-year-old Brian, a boy struggling with his parents' divorce, who is flying north to spend the summer with his father when his single-engine plane crashes. Brian is left alone in the forest with a windbreaker and a hatchet, a present from his mother, along with a painful secret he has carried since the divorce. With no time for anger or self-pity, he must rely on his own know-how, determination and courage to stay alive. The novel received a Newbery Honor and opens the five-book Hatchet series, which continues with The River.
Andreas Zhou, co-founder of Askable, received it as a gift from an elementary school teacher and recalls reading it perhaps 20 times or more, drawn by its survival theme and vivid sense of place.

My elementary school teacher gave me a copy of this book as a present and I think I read it at least 20 times. I was fascinated by the 'survival' theme and Paulsen tells the story in such a visceral way he really transports you to the location and you feel every bit of cold, fear and hunger that the main character does.
