Alice Munro's tenth collection of short stories appeared in 2001. In the title story, set in southwestern Ontario, Johanna, a plain, unmarried housekeeper, leaves her employer to join a man she believes loves her, unaware that their letters were forged by two teenage girls as a practical joke. The Bear Came Over the Mountain follows Grant, a retired professor, as his wife Fiona's memory slowly fails and she drifts away from him. Other stories include Floating Bridge, about Jinny, a woman with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, and Family Furnishings. Sarah Polley adapted The Bear Came Over the Mountain as the 2006 film Away from Her, and the title story became the film Hateship Loveship.

Sam Altman picked it as a weekend book recommendation, saying he stayed up late to finish it and found it really good.
