About the book
Set in a mill town in 1930s Georgia, Carson McCullers's debut novel centers on John Singer, a deaf man who signs and has lived for years with his mute friend Spiros Antonapoulos. When Antonapoulos is sent to an asylum far from town, Singer takes a room in the Kelly family's house. Four townspeople start visiting him: Mick Kelly, a twelve-year-old tomboy who dreams of owning a piano; Jake Blount, a hard-drinking labor agitator; Biff Brannon, who keeps his diner open all night; and an idealistic doctor, Benedict Mady Copeland. Each believes Singer understands their struggles. McCullers was 23 when it appeared, and critics read it both as realist social commentary and as a parable about fascism.
Oprah Winfrey said she had heard about it for years before a friend named it among her all-time favorites, and she called it a great read that is not hard at all.

I love this book! I had heard about this book for years and then my dear friend Julia Roberts did an interview in O, The Oprah Magazine and she listed this as one of her favorite books of all times. The book I love so much—recommended to me by Julia—is The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers. It's a great, great read and not hard at all.
