A badly damaged B-17 flown by 21-year-old Second Lieutenant Charlie Brown was struggling over Germany in December 1943 when Luftwaffe ace Franz Stigler pulled up behind it in a Messerschmitt Bf 109. Instead of attacking, Stigler saw the wounded crew, flew in formation with the bomber and guided it out of German airspace. Adam Makos, editor of the military history magazine Valor, tells the story with military writer Larry Alexander, using interviews with both pilots more than 50 years later. The narrative follows Stigler from airline work to training Luftwaffe pilots, Brown from a West Virginia farm, and the two men's later reunion. Berkley Books published it with photographs, notes and a bibliography.

A few months back, I read a book called A Higher Call: An Incredible True Story of Combat and Chivalry in the War-Torn Skies of World War II that led me to want to learn more about Nazi Germany and Hitler, so I then picked up The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, which led me to wanting to learn more about Winston Churchill.
