His Master’s Voice

Stanisław Lem's novel takes the form of a memoir by Peter Hogarth, a mathematician who joins a Pentagon-run project in the Nevada desert, code-named His Master's Voice, where scientists are working on what may be a message from outer space, a stream of neutrinos coming from the direction of Canis Minor. Through the project's debates Lem takes up epistemology, information theory, probability, evolutionary biology, the possible nature of alien intelligence and the ethics of military-sponsored research. Michael Kandel translated it into English, and it is counted among Lem's three best-known books with Solaris and The Cyberiad. A Hungarian film by György Pálfi was loosely based on it.

Andrej Karpathy likened it to Contact, but written for adults.
