About the book
Between December 1936 and June 1937, George Orwell fought in the Spanish Civil War with the POUM militia in Catalonia, and this memoir records what he saw. He describes the revolutionary mood of Barcelona while he trained there, the boredom of the front line in Aragon, the factional clashes of the May Days in Barcelona during his leave, the bullet that struck him in the throat, and his flight to France once the POUM had been outlawed. The war shaped his political outlook and helped lead to his later writing against totalitarianism. Published in 1938, it drew mixed reviews at first and found a wider readership after Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four.
It appears among Jordan B. Peterson's suggested readings for Maps of Meaning, and Marc Andreessen included it in a group of four books on the Spanish Civil War, a conflict he called the trial run for the following century of Western history.
