About the book
When Stefan Merrill Block was nine, he was taken out of school by his mother, who was convinced his teachers were stifling his creativity and began teaching him in the family living room. Apart from his math lessons he was largely left to himself and to his mother's erratic projects, including an effort to recover his early years by bleaching her twelve-year-old son's hair and making him crawl on a set routine. Block's memoir also traces how the homeschooling movement began and grew across America, his return to public school and the bullying he faced there, and his path toward forgiveness as he becomes a parent himself.
