About the book
Elif Shafak's novel follows twin sisters born in a Kurdish village whose lives take different paths. Jamila stays and becomes the village midwife, while Pembe goes to London in the 1970s with Adem, her Turkish husband, hoping to build a new life for the family. In London the family faces a choice between loyalty to old traditions and trying to fit in. Their children include Iskender, the eldest son, and his sister Esma. An honor killing tears the family apart and changes all their lives. Shafak's themes include betrayal and loyalty, innocence and guilt, and the hardships immigrants face.
