A house whose inside is bigger than its outside is the mystery at the heart of Mark Z. Danielewski's debut novel. Photojournalist Will Navidson, his companion Karen Green and their family find it on Ash Tree Lane, and their discovery is recorded in a fictional documentary, The Navidson Record. That film reaches the reader through a handwritten academic study of it, transcribed and heavily footnoted by the narrator, Johnny Truant. With appendices, an index, colored words and pages that must be rotated to be read, it is usually called horror, though the author also accepts reading it as a love story. The novel later won a Young Lions Fiction Award from the New York Public Library.
In Tools of Titans, obstacle racer and Apple attorney Amelia Boone said it has to be read as a physical book, since some pages must be turned upside down or followed in a circle, which makes it a full sensory experience.
