How to Turn Down a Billion Dollars

In 2013, Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy, two of Snapchat's co-founders, surprised the press by turning down Facebook's offer of three billion dollars. Tech journalist Billy Gallagher, a fellow Stanford undergraduate and a fraternity brother of the founding trio, has covered the company from the start and traces its rise. The idea began with Stanford junior Reggie Brown's regrets over photos he had sent, and after a major feud between friends Brown lost his stake. Spiegel went on to a reputation as a visionary but ruthless chief executive, linked to celebrities such as Taylor Swift and his wife, Miranda Kerr. Gallagher also considers Snapchat's challenges as it becomes a major public company.
