About the book
Allie Brosh's illustrated collection grew out of Hyperbole and a Half, the blog she started in 2009 and drew in Paintbrush with deliberately crude stick figures. The full-color book mixes text and pictures to tell stories from her childhood, her dogs and their trouble with moving house, and her struggles with depression. More than half of the content is new, with ten essays never posted online and one revised and expanded piece, alongside blog favorites such as The God of Cake and her two posts on depression. Brosh often redraws an image many times to get expressions right. The book reached New York Times best seller lists and drew praise for its depiction of depression.
Bill Gates said that although Brosh draws herself as an odd outsider, readers relate to her struggles and laugh with her, and he admired her scientist's eye for observation, artist's creativity and comedian's wit.
