About the book
Bob Hoffman tells the story of American soldiers in France during World War I as a man who spent months fighting at the very front. At the center of the account is the battle of Fismette, five days he calls the worst any American army unit endured in France. His comrades lacked artillery support for most of the fighting, had no trench mortars or grenades, and went without food, proper medical care or a chance to bury their dead. Hoffman sets down plainly how the men lived, slept, marched, fought and died, and he says there was nothing beautiful about the story. He wrote it hoping to show a later generation the folly and tragedy of war.
Jocko Willink grouped it with war memoirs he values for giving a glimpse of human nature and of how people respond in certain situations, even when the leadership principle is not always clear.

But when you understand what people are going through emotionally and you start to get a glimpse at human nature and how people react in certain situations and how their egos flare up, that’s what makes these books good. Because it gives you a frame of reference.
