About the book
After the sudden death of a beloved uncle while she was in college, and seeing a deserted mining town not long after his funeral, Kristen Radtke developed a lifelong fascination with ruins and with the people and places left behind. That pull eventually took her across the globe to seek out ruins, and her graphic memoir moves through the American Midwest, islands in the Philippines and New York City. Along the way she writes of her family and an uncommon inherited heart disease passed down for generations, and revisits tragic events from America's past. Her drawings and text mix the personal and the historical to consider why people are here and what they leave behind.

I love graphic novels. I don’t read enough because – well – I don’t know. Amy bought me this one because she loved the cover. Kristen Radtke wrote a beautiful, provocative, at times extremely sad, but also uplifting story that is auto-biographical. I wish I could write this well. And, when I read a book like this, I really wish I could draw.
