Geoffrey Parker's biography of Philip II rests on four decades of research and on a recent archival find: 3,000 documents held by New York's Hispanic Society of America, unread since they crossed the king's desk over four centuries ago. Many of them significantly change what is known about him. Husband of Mary Tudor, Philip later sent the Spanish Armada against Elizabeth I, her sister. Parker examines his long apprenticeship, his three main interests of work, play and religion, and the political, military and personal trials of his reign, and asks why he failed as a leader: an empire too big to manage, or a ruler with the wrong talents and temperament.
