About the book
Martin MacInnes's science fiction novel follows Leigh, who grows up in a near-future Rotterdam protected from rising seas by dikes and dams, and finds in the water an escape from an unhappy home and a volatile father. She becomes a marine biologist studying ancient organisms, and after a trench turns up in the Atlantic she joins the team exploring it, hoping for evidence of the earth's first life. It was longlisted for the 2023 Booker Prize and won the 2024 Arthur C. Clarke Award.
