About the book
Set in the apple country of California, John Steinbeck's novel follows Jim Nolan, an aimless young man who joins the Communist Party and travels with its organizer Mac McLeod, his new mentor, to the Torgas Valley. Their aim is to turn the migrant fruit pickers there against the Growers' Association and spread the strike to Tandale's cotton fields. The novel looks at the strikers as a crowd with a force of its own, stronger than any single member. Steinbeck first planned a journalistic account of a strike, but used it instead as a symbol of man's endless war with himself. The title comes from Milton's Paradise Lost; James Franco directed a 2016 film loosely based on it.
