About the book
Neuroscientist David Eagleman argues that most of what the brain does happens outside awareness, and that the conscious mind is only a small part of the system. He compares it to a stowaway on a steamship who takes credit for a crossing powered by machinery below deck. Just as earlier science moved humanity away from the center of the cosmos, he contends, brain science moves consciousness away from the center of the mind. Examples include a foot moving toward the brake before danger registers and people whose names start with J being likelier to marry J-named partners. Synesthesia, infidelity, criminal law, visual illusions and artificial intelligence also come up. The 2011 book became a New York Times best seller.
Ray Dalio called it wonderful and drew on it in his principle about understanding how people are wired. Seth Godin put it on his fall 2011 reading list, saying it would help readers grasp the chemistry and electricity inside their own heads more fully than they had before.
