About the book

Hans Christian von Baeyer, who teaches physics at William and Mary, sets out what information is and how ideas about its meaning, transmission and measurement developed. He suggests that information may replace matter as the basic stuff of the universe, offering a new framework for describing and predicting reality. Written in plain language, the book introduces both classical and quantum information, mixing in anecdotes from philosophers, mathematicians and scientists who shaped the field. It moves from the subjectivity built into classical information to the quantum era's blurring of computers with what they measure or store. It was published in 2003.

Nassim Nicholas Taleb praised it as a clear, intuitive way into information theory and, in a sense, probability, and said he would make it a prerequisite before more technical texts such as Cover and Thompson.

Nassim Nicholas Taleb (Flaneur)

If you want an introduction to information theory, and, in a way, probability theory from the real front door, this is it. A clearly written book, very intuititive, explains things, such as the Monty Hall problem in a few lines. I will make it a prerequite before more technical great books, such as Cover and Thompson.
