About the book
Across nine short stories, Jhumpa Lahiri follows Indian and Indian-American characters caught between the traditions they inherited and the New World, moving between India and New England. In A Temporary Matter, a married couple in Boston, grieving a stillborn child, begin to talk again during a series of nightly power outages. In the title story, Mr. Kapasi, a tour guide, shows an American family around their ancestral homeland. Another story has a young girl, Lilia, learn about the conflict in East Pakistan from Mr. Pirzada, who visits her family for dinner each night. Published in 1999, the collection took both the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
Leah Lizarondo, co-founder of 412 Food Rescue, said these stories ended a long dry spell in her reading, and she recalls putting the book down at times to close her eyes and take in what she had just read.

Given free time to do anything I would read fiction. This book took me out of a long dry spell because it is a collection of short stories that I could read while in the bath. Each story is written so beautifully, I still remember putting the book down from time to time, just to close my eyes and absorb what I just read.
