About the book
Across four decades of service at the United Nations, Kofi Annan stood near the center of the crises he recounts in his memoir, written with his former adviser and speechwriter Nader Mousavizadeh. Annan, winner of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize, served as Deputy Secretary-General and then Secretary-General, and he recounts the conflicts of that period: Somalia, Rwanda, Bosnia, Kosovo, the September 11 attacks, the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, and the war involving Israel, Hizbollah and Lebanon. He says that during the Rwandan crisis not one government made a serious offer of troops. He also covers the International Criminal Court, the responsibility to protect, and criticism of leaders including Robert Mugabe and Thabo Mbeki. The memoir was published in 2012.
Bill Gates said it helped him see the other side of Annan's UN work, from peacekeeping to the Security Council, and called the job of Secretary-General clearly very demanding.

It was helpful to learn about the other side of Annan’s work at the UN -- peacekeeping issues and the work of the Security Council. It is clearly very challenging work. One day, the Secretary-General has to be an impartial arbiter of disputes among member states. The next, he has to challenge member countries he believes are not acting in the interest of world peace. Surviving in that position for 10 years says a lot about Annan’s diplomatic skills.
