Michael Abrashoff took command of the destroyer USS Benfold, the ship had every cutting-edge system available but only some of the productivity, and he concluded he had to improve his own leadership before he could improve the ship. Within months he had a crew of confident problem-solvers, It's your ship became the shipboard slogan, and Benfold came to be seen as a model of naval efficiency. Abrashoff sets out his principles, among them seeing the ship through the crew's eyes, constant communication, discipline built on purpose and aggressive listening. In one example he had the SATs given to his sailors at sea off Iraq, because many hoped to use the GI Bill.
