About the book
Jez Butterworth's comic play unfolds in Wiltshire on St George's Day, the morning of the county fair. Johnny Byron, known as Rooster, is a former daredevil and spinner of tall tales who lives in a caravan in the woods and keeps a gang of local hangers-on supplied with drink and drugs. Now everyone wants something from him: council officials have come to serve an eviction notice, his young son wants a trip to the fair, and the local thug Troy Whitworth wants to beat him up. Mark Rylance played Rooster when it opened at London's Royal Court Theatre in July 2009, and it won Best Play at that year's Evening Standard Awards.
Dua Lipa first read it at 15 while studying for her English GCSEs, and says the character Johnny 'Rooster' Byron has stayed with her ever since. Seeing the role performed onstage in 2022 lived up to everything she had pictured.

I first read Jerusalem at 15, studying for my English GCSEs, and Johnny ‘Rooster’ Byron has stayed with me ever since. When I finally saw legendary actor Mark Rylance perform the role onstage in 2022, it was everything I had imagined. Now, I want you to have that experience.
