On February 14, 1989, a BBC journalist telephoned Salman Rushdie to tell him the Ayatollah Khomeini had sentenced him to death over his novel The Satanic Verses. The memoir recounts the more than nine years that followed, as Rushdie lived underground under armed police protection and moved from house to house. Its title is the alias he chose for the police, joining the first names of Joseph Conrad and Anton Chekhov. Written in the third person, it covers his bonds with his protectors, his search for backing from governments, publishers and fellow writers, and the end of his second marriage. It was longlisted for the 2012 Samuel Johnson Prize.
Readable founder Gabriel Coarna picked it up the moment he heard Rushdie had published an account of the years he spent hiding.
