About the book
Michael Crichton's 1990 science fiction novel imagines a theme park of living dinosaurs on the remote island of Isla Nublar, built by John Hammond, founder of the bioengineering firm InGen. His scientists have recreated the animals from ancient DNA taken from blood inside insects preserved in amber. After strange animal attacks in Costa Rica unsettle his investors, Hammond flies in paleontologist Alan Grant and paleobotanist Ellie Sattler for a weekend tour, joined by the chaos theorist Ian Malcolm, a lawyer for the investors and Hammond's two grandchildren. The novel warns against reckless genetic engineering, with the park illustrating chaos theory. Steven Spielberg adapted it as a film, and Crichton followed it with The Lost World.
Richard Branson chose it for his World Book Day list of 65 books for a lifetime.
