About the book
Across alternating chapters, Haruki Murakami's novel follows two stories. In one, Kafka Tamura, a bookish 15-year-old fleeing an Oedipal prophecy, runs away from home in Tokyo and finds refuge in a quiet private library in Takamatsu on Shikoku. In the other, Nakata, an aging man left unable to read or write after a strange incident in his wartime childhood, earns money finding lost cats, which he can talk to. Its English translation won the World Fantasy Award and was named one of The New York Times's 10 best books of its year.
John Craig of John Craig Media calls Murakami the one author who takes priority for him and suggests starting with this novel. ReCactus founder Bernard Tan named it in an interview about how reading connects him to people from other times and places.

The only book, or should I say author, that takes priority is Haruki Murakami. He is a Japanese novelist that takes me into the next world. His style is surreal. Check it out. Start with Kafka on the Shore.
