About the book
Set in pre-Roman Britain, Shakespeare's tragedy centers on a king who gives up power and plans to split his land among his three daughters by how warmly each declares her love. Goneril and Regan answer with flattery, while Cordelia, the youngest, says only that she loves him as duty requires, and Lear disowns her and banishes Kent for defending her. A second plot follows the Earl of Gloucester, whose illegitimate son Edmund uses a forged letter to turn him against Edgar, the legitimate heir. Drawn from the legend of Leir of Britain, the play survives in quarto and First Folio texts that differ considerably, and Nahum Tate's rewrite with a gentler ending held the stage for some 150 years.
