King, Warrior, Magician, Lover

The Jungian analysts Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette argue that mature masculinity is generative and creative, strengthening both the self and others, rather than abusive or domineering. They identify four mature male archetypes that appear again and again in myth and literature: the king, embodying just and creative order; the warrior, aggressive yet nonviolent action; the magician, initiation and transformation; and the lover, which ties a man to other people and the world. Against these they set four immature patterns that block a man's potential: the divine child, the oedipal child, the trickster and the hero. The authors aim to help both men and women rethink the male psyche.
