David Fraser, a British general and historian, brings a soldier's eye to the career of Erwin Rommel, the leading Axis field commander of World War II. Fraser traces Rommel's bold maneuver, ferocity in attack and tenacity in pursuit from his first battles in the First World War through the North African desert to the defense of Europe against the Allied invasion of 1944. He describes a spontaneous style of leadership that could look haphazard on the surface. The biography also follows Rommel into politics, when he tried to show Hitler the military realities and was branded a defeatist, and it weighs whether he took part in the conspiracy against Hitler and how he came to die.
