About the book
The period from 1920 to 1933, when a constitutional amendment restricted drinking in the United States, is the subject of Daniel Okrent's history, which explains how Prohibition came about, what life under it was like and how it changed the country. America was awash in drink from the start, with liquor cheaper than tea by the 1820s, and Okrent shows Prohibition arising from a convergence of forces: women's suffrage allied with the antiliquor campaign, small-town Protestant fears of big-city immigrants, anti-German feeling in World War I, and the income tax. The cast runs from Billy Sunday and Susan B. Anthony to H. L. Mencken and federal official Mabel Walker Willebrandt. It was a main influence on Ken Burns's documentary Prohibition.
Marc Andreessen recommended it as a good book on the subject in a Substack follow-up post about pausing alcohol.
