Edward de Bono, who invented the idea of lateral thinking, explains in a textbook of creativity why the head-on problem solving taught in schools, which he calls vertical thinking, serves well in simple situations but leaves people stuck when it fails. Lateral thinking is his alternative, a way of freeing the imagination. He presents a series of specific techniques, to be practised alone or in groups, that stimulate the mind so a problem is examined from several angles and yields solutions both ingenious and workable. De Bono offers it as a practical account of how creativity works. It appeared in 1970.
