About the book

The English rock band of Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Bonham and John Paul Jones is the subject of this biography by Bob Spitz, who earlier wrote a history of the Beatles. The biography sets out to separate the band's myths from what actually happened. It follows their sound, which set English folk against African American blues and lofty artistic ambition against raw force, from the first album onward, and sets the group inside the wider popular music business of the time. Spitz also uses the band to show how the sixties turned into the seventies and how rock took over, and he covers their behavior on tour, sorting true stories from legend. Penguin Books published it in November 2021.

Tyler Cowen put it on his list of the best non-fiction books of 2021, saying the band always turns out better than expected and calling it the most serious book about them.
