About the book
From 1815 onward, Victor Hugo's epic historical novel follows several characters in France, above all the ex-convict Jean Valjean and the police detective Javert who hounds him. Hugo built the story from life: Valjean is loosely based on the ex-convict Eugène François Vidocq, and Hugo toured the Bagne of Toulon prison in 1839, taking extensive notes, years before he began the novel in 1845. Around the plot Hugo writes at length on French history, Parisian architecture and urban design, politics, moral philosophy, justice and religion. In his preface Hugo wrote that books like it would remain useful as long as ignorance and poverty exist. Its many adaptations include a stage musical as well as film and television versions.
