About the book

Vocation, for Parker J. Palmer, means listening to an inner teacher and following it toward meaning and purpose. His meditation opens by asking whether the life he is living matches the life seeking to live in him. Palmer tells stories from his own unconventional working life, including its fumbles and failures and his deep bouts of depression, and from the lives of other people who made a difference. He describes a search for an undivided life, recasts a life as a run of experiments with truth, and argues that doors closing behind a person can guide as much as those that open. First published in 1999, it later returned in a 25th anniversary edition with a new introduction.

Photographer David McCammon said Palmer offered him insight, while he was teaching, into how to reach his students with empathy and authenticity, and that he returns to it at least once a year.

David McCammon (Photographer)

I was teaching at the time and Palmer provided insight into reaching my students with empathy and authenticity. I was facing life challenges of my own as well. Palmer’s book gently gave me pause to consider where I wanted to go from here without imposing the how. Let Your Life Speak reminded me changing direction is a great choice throughout one’s life. I revisit this book at least once a year.
