About the book
The English country house, from the Middle Ages onward, is the subject of Mark Girouard's study of how it evolved and the social role it played, drawn from literature, social chronicles and family documents. The work grew out of his Slade lectures at Oxford University in 1975 and 1976, and was published in 1978.
