About the book

SpaceX came close to collapse before it ever reached orbit, and Eric Berger, senior space editor at Ars Technica, tells how it survived. He concentrates on the Falcon 1 rocket, whose first three launches failed, each for a different technical reason, before a fourth attempt succeeded in September 2008. The company started out with under 200 staff and roughly $100 million, up against Lockheed Martin and Boeing. The story moves from El Segundo to Texas, where engines were tested, and on to launches from Kwajalein Atoll, and stresses an iterative design approach that treated failure as part of engineering. Berger interviewed dozens of engineers, mechanics and executives, Elon Musk among them, for the 2021 book.

Naval Ravikant pointed to it as an account of how Musk and his team built SpaceX's first rocket, pairing it with The Macintosh Way.
