Jo Boaler, a Stanford University professor of education and math educator, has spent decades studying how beliefs and bias affect learning. Her argument is that brains are not fixed: they can change, grow, adapt and rewire. She challenges ideas picked up from the first years of school, such as lacking a math brain or not being the creative type, which she says erode confidence and narrow choices well into adulthood. Drawing on recent brain science and her own research, she sets out six keys to learning, and argues that people who reach the highest levels get there through those keys rather than a genetic gift for one skill.
