About the book
Stanford neuroscientist David Eagleman argues that the brain is not hardwired but livewired, a term he proposes in place of plastic: a dynamic system that keeps rewiring its circuits to fit the demands of its body and environment. Through his theory of infotropism, he holds that the brain's basic principle is maximizing information, reconfiguring to boost data from the outside world much as plants grow toward light. Examples include a child living with half his brain removed, a blind man who hits a baseball through a sensor on his tongue, and thought-controlled robotic suits for paralyzed people. Eagleman also presents work from his own laboratory on dreaming, synesthesia and wearable sensory devices. It drew a Pulitzer Prize nomination.
Andrew Huberman said that, in his opinion, it is the most up to date and the best book on the subject so far.
