The Living Gita

Sri Swami Satchidananda offers a modern translation of and commentary on the complete Bhagavad Gita, every verse included, meant to make its teaching clear to Western readers. The Gita itself centres on Arjuna, a great warrior who sits in his chariot before a battle, sees his kinsmen and the teacher he reveres lined up against him, and feels he cannot fight. Krishna, the Cosmic Lord, then comes to counsel him. The scene is read as allegory: the chariot is the body, Arjuna the human soul riding in it, and Krishna the inner Spirit, the God within. It reached the final round of the Publishers' Marketing Association's Spiritual Book of the Year Award.
