About the book
The photography collection of the Museum of Modern Art got its first survey in this selection of 100 pictures, each paired with a text by John Szarkowski, the museum's photography curator. The collection began when the museum accessioned its first photograph in 1930. Szarkowski calls it a picture book meant first for simple enjoyment, and it also serves as an introduction to the aesthetics and historical development of photography. The photographers range from Hill and Adamson, Atget and Stieglitz to Cartier-Bresson, Lange, Frank and Arbus, and the selection mixes familiar classics with little-known works by masters of the form. First published in 1973, it was reissued in 1999 with new digital duotones.
