Looking for Smoke

Set on the Blackfeet Reservation, K. A. Cobell's debut novel follows Mara Racette, who moved there with her parents and has felt like an outsider ever since, mocked by close-knit classmates because she grew up somewhere else. When a local girl includes her in a traditional Blackfeet Giveaway held to honor a missing sister, Mara hopes she will finally make friends. Instead Samantha White Tail, a girl from the Giveaway, is found murdered, and because the group were the last to see her alive, Mara and three other teens become suspects in the investigation. Cobell, who is Blackfeet herself, wrote the book as a literary thriller and murder mystery.

Reese Witherspoon chose it for Reese's Book Club in 2024.
