A second traveler, the Bassanian physician Rustem of Kerakek, is drawn into the city's intrigue. As war draws closer, chariot races at the hippodrome consume the ordinary people, an interplay between rulers and the crowd that runs through the book.

A historical fantasy set in a byzantine world where the Eastern Roman Empire is on the verge of war with the Ostogothic Kingdom of Italy from the point of view of a commissioned mosaicist artist. Fantastic story and very interesting historically as the author definitely did tremendous research for the book.
