The Man in the High Castle

Philip K. Dick's alternative history imagines a 1962 in which the Axis powers won the Second World War and Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany rule a divided United States. Slavery is legal again, the few surviving Jews live under false names, and in San Francisco the I Ching is in common use. The story moves among characters such as Robert Childan, who sells Americana to Japanese collectors, trade official Nobusuke Tagomi, Frank Frink, a war veteran hiding that he is Jewish, and his ex-wife Juliana, a judo instructor in Colorado. The mysterious man of the title has written a subversive novel within the novel that imagines an Allied victory. The book took the 1963 Hugo Award for Best Novel.
