After the success of the Nashville sit-ins, John Lewis is even more devoted to nonviolence when he and other Freedom Riders board a bus into the Deep South. There the young activists face beatings, police brutality, imprisonment, arson and murder while also wrestling with conflicts inside the movement. Their courage draws the attention of Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. Once the 23-year-old Lewis wins election as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, he becomes one of the movement's Big Six leaders and a key figure at the 1963 March on Washington. The volume is the second in the March trilogy, the graphic memoir Lewis wrote with Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell illustrated.

Tim Cook was reported to have hoped the March books would one day be required reading in every school, calling them a unique way to tell probably the most important story of his lifetime.
