About the book
Donald Robertson's biography follows the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, who lived from 121 to 180 CE, through his inner life as a Stoic philosopher and the outer events of a reign at the peak of Roman power. It examines his relationships with his mother, Domitia Lucilla, the emperor Hadrian and his Stoic tutors, drawing on the Meditations, his letters, the Augustan History and other ancient texts. Robertson shows Marcus struggling to square philosophy with politics, and looks at his views on slavery and captured enemies, his attitude toward women, how Stoicism shaped his reaction to a threatened civil war, how Christians fared under him, and his choice of his son Commodus as heir.
Ryan Holiday, who had long hoped for a good biography of Marcus Aurelius, said this one finally filled that gap and named it among the very best books he read in 2024.
