About the book
Deepak Singh's account follows his downward mobility as an immigrant in a small Virginia town, where his MBA from India gets him no more than minimum-wage work at an electronics store. Arriving fresh off the plane, he meets unfamiliar American customs every day, from puzzling idioms to entrenched racism. Through his initially credulous outsider's eyes he also learns the struggles of his coworkers: Ron, a middle-aged African-American man struggling to keep his life on track amid health worries; Jackie, a young African-American student who attends classes after her shifts; and Cindy, whose plain, practical manner eases his adjustment. The book holds that low-wage employees' experiences can add honesty and a human face to arguments over immigration, race and work.
