The volume pairs that account of his campaigns, from the Mexican War to his Civil War command, with 174 letters, many of them addressed to Julia, his wife, that show the warmth of their long marriage. It reproduces maps, battle plans and facsimiles from the original edition and adds annotations throughout. Edmund Wilson, Gertrude Stein, Matthew Arnold and Mark Twain are among the very different readers who have admired the memoirs, which earned their author a lasting place in American writing.
